New Release: Tor Browser 8.0.6

by boklm | February 12, 2019

Tor Browser 8.0.6 is now available from the Tor Browser Project page and also from our distribution directory.

This release features important security updates to Firefox.

The main change in this new release is the update of Firefox to 60.5.1esr, fixing some vulnerabilities in the Skia library.

The full changelog since Tor Browser 8.0.5 is:

  • All platforms
    • Update Firefox to 60.5.1esr
    • Update HTTPS Everywhere to 2019.1.31
    • Bug 29378: Remove 83.212.101.3 from default bridges
  • Build System
    • All Platforms
      • Bug 29235: Build our own version of python3.6 for HTTPS Everywhere

If you have tor installed using the tor package from your distribution (in addition to Tor Browser), then running "tor --version" in the terminal might be running the version installed on your system, but not the version included in Tor Browser.

That is a helper program which downloads the official bundle, verifies it, unpacks it somewhere in your home directory and creates nice shortcuts for it. It does not have its own version of Tor or Browser.
It should be fine but you may want to download the bundle yourself.

Regression still persists in 8.0.6, causing browser screen size to vary.

See reopened defect https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27845.

After upgrading from TB 8.0.5 to 8.0.6, initial screen size was wide:1000 x high1000 with Bookmarks Toolbar not enabled.

Screen size changed to wide:1000 x high:978 after enabling Bookmarks Toolbar, with bookmark-folders with text and individual bookmarks with text appearing in Bookmarks Toolbar.

Screen size changed to wide:1000 x high:998 after quitting and restarting TB, with bookmark-folders with text and individual bookmarks with text appearing in Bookmarks Toolbar.

Screen size changed to wide:1000 x high:1020 after disabling Bookmarks Toolbar.

Screen size changed to wide:1000 x high:1000 after restarting TB, with Bookmarks Toolbar disabled.

Screen size changed to wide:1000 x high:998 after enabling Bookmarks Toolbar with bookmark-folders with text and individual bookmarks with text appearing in Bookmarks Toolbar.

In an earlier comment in this discussion, I reported that with the Bookmarks Toolbar enabled and with bookmarks-folders with text and individual bookmarks with text appearing in the enabled Bookmarks Toolbar, my screen size was wide:1000 x high:0998 (MacOS).

Resolution: "Customize/Density/Normal" is the default setting in 8.0.6. Changed that setting to "Customize/Density/Compact" with the result the screen size changed to `wide:1000 x high:1000` with text and individual bookmarks with text appearing in the enabled Bookmarks Toolbar.

I only browse with javascript disabled:

-Is it ok for me to remove NoScript?

-Almost all sites get broken so I'm constantly using No Style/Basic Page Style. I wish I could safely assign one single key to
toggle between them. Is it possible for you to incorporate a shortcut editor in Tor Browser? (https://addons.mozilla.org/
en-US/firefox/search/?q=shortcut).

Is there a way to make Tor Browser windows stick to their original default size? I sometimes accidentally maximize them or
drag their borders.

> Is there a way to make Tor Browser windows stick to their original default size?
> I sometimes accidentally maximize them or drag their borders.

Same here. I would appreciate it very much if there was some kind of confirmation-button to push before changing the window's size.

Thanks in advance (and in retrospect for the great job you're doing to make the internet a better place).

Since I've started to use Tor Browser, which is many, many moons ago, a yellow message appears just beneath the URL when I accidentally maximise the browser, or when a site tries to maximise it, or when a site asks for permission to maximise it. Apart from misspelling 'maximise' - as those across the pond tend to misspell much of (what used to be) the English language - the message should be more than adequate for everyone to respond responsibly.
'Maximizing Tor Browser can allow websites to determine your monitor size, which can be used to track you. We recommend that you leave Tor Browser windows in their original default size.'
There you have an OK button to revert back to the default size.
Perhaps we should ask the progammers to make a video tutorial with step-by-step instructions for those in their early years (which may prove to be equally superfluous than writing documentation or having a page dedicated to instructions for using Tor safely), which video could labouriously spell out click-by-click how to use Tor properly - with an added interactive webpage with many examples for practicing the lessons?

To restore Tor Browser windows to their original default size:

If you clicked maximise, click it again to restore. If you dragged the borders, you can click the onion icon (TorButton) and click New Identity, or you can close Tor Browser and reopen it. Caution: New Identity will close all tabs.

If your desktop environment supports window snapping, you could adjust the window of something else (for example, a text editor or Firefox) to the size of the Tor Browser window. Then, if you accidentally drag Tor Browser's borders, you can set the windows on top of each other and snap each Tor Browser border to the other window's borders.

I'd like to add another search engine and use it as my standard: “MetaGer”, the address of which is https://metager.de/ . The MetaGer team also provide a hidden service of their search engine, which is http://b7cxf4dkdsko6ah2.onion/ . Probably this is one of the safest and most anonymous search engines.

My question: Can I add another search engine and use it as standard, or would this lead to de-anonymisation?

Thank in advance for your answer.

That's an excellent search page.
In Tor's (Firefox's) preferences, you can change your Home Page; copy and paste the page's address in there. When you restart Tor Browser, it'll display that page in stead of its default Duck Duck Go - which has been proven to be neither secure, nor private.

Sorry for answering so late.

The problem with changing the “about Tor page” into a different start page is that the violet “about Tor page” tells you that Tor is working correctly. If not, you'll get that red page telling that “Something went wrong” and that Tor doesn't work. If you change the start page, you won't know whether everything works fine.
That is why I wondered if I could install MetaGer as an additional search engine and choose it as my standard search engine. That could be done either by installing MetaGer from the Firefox add-ons page (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/search/?q=metager&platform=WINNT&…) where are special versions for the Tor Browser or by the plugin MetaGer has on its page.
Unfortunately, there's no possibility to install the onion version of MetaGer …

However, my actual question was if adding a search engine to Tor Browser's pre-installed ones and even use the newly installed search engine as standard could lead to deanonymisation, because there are so many warnings not to change Tor Browser and not to install anything.

So once again my question:
Might installing an additional search engine and use it as a standard lead to deanonymisation?

I can't get the Disqus comments posted on this website to open in Tor Browser:

Clicking the "VIEW COMMENTS" link under the above article in Tor Browser just refreshes the page without opening the comments; clicking "VIEW COMMENTS" in other browsers allows the comments to be viewed.

Older builds of Tor Browser display the same behavior when the "VIEW COMMENTS" links under articles are clicked on this website.

Is this a bug in Tor Browser or am I doing something wrong?

This looks similar to this ticket:
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27249

No, it's a different issue. I can log in to Disqus on https://disqus.com/ in Tor Browser, and post and read comments there with no problems.

I can also read the Disqus comments on other websites, like this one:

http://gothamist.com/2019/02/14/amazon_real_estate_lic.php

Notice how the Disqus comments on the above webpage just load automatically.

Unlike on the problem site, where the Disqus comments are hidden behind a clickable "VIEW COMMENTS" button/link:

https://forward.com/opinion/418950/that-ivanka-trump-art-exhibit-is-mor…

Try as I might, I cannot get the Disqus comments on the webpage above to open in Tor Browser, like I can in other browsers.

wtf (not verified) said: "default NoScript allows all features - why insecure by default?.. is Tor now compromised by default??"

Yes wtf, you are correct.

"Why does Tor Browser ship with Javascript enabled?"

to be "usable for the majority of people" = so that they are much less secure and much easier to be fingerprinted.

Not to mention location, camera, audio, GPU turned on by default - another guarantee of a fingerprinted device.

To harden Tor the first thing is to move Security Settings slider to Safest, then in Tools Options disable the GPU, location etc and other obvious tracking options. Who knows what fingerprinting is going on in about:config or hardcoded into firefox or tor itself.

I wish someone would tell me why I cannot bookmark pages using Tor 8.0.6 and whether it's a Windows 10 setting issue or a browser setting issue. I've posted many times about this. Version 8.0.4 was the current version when I got my new desktop that runs Windows 10. I never had this problem with my old PC running Windows 7. Thanks.

Absolutely nothing. No popup where you can change the page name and the folder to save the bookmark in. No error message, no bookmark saved. Other Bookmarks folder stays empty as does Bookmarks library. When running Firefox, my default browser, I can bookmark pages as pretty as you please. Thanks for responding.

Is this something new with Tor Browser 8.0.6, or it didn't work in previous versions either?

How do you try to bookmark pages? What happens when you click on the star next to the URL bar? When this is working, the star becomes blue when the page has been bookmarked.

Thank you for responding. This has been happening since Windows 10 - Tor 8.0.3. Windows 7 no problem ever.

I've been unable to bookmark pages or links since I started using my new desktop running Windows 10 Home. It must be a Windows 10 compatibility issue, because Tor 8.0.6 runs perfectly on my laptop running Windows 7 Professional. I can bookmark pages and links as pretty as you please on my laptop.

I think that's due to a policy on some Windows 10 machines that make folders in locations like the desktop (which the Tor Browser installer offers by default) as read-only. I think we have a comment about that in one of our tickets but I can't find it right now...

I think that comment was from me. I've sent in many comments on this bookmark issue. Can you guys come up with a fix or tell me how to get around this in Windows 10? Thanks.

1. try ctrl+D to see if the create bookmark comes up. crtl+D

2. try to recall an URL that you have bookmarked.
- manually enter that URL into a tab and go there.
- is the star blue? Does ctrl+d bring up the " 'Edit this bookmark' window" but confirming/implying that the URL is already bookmarked (though inaccessible in any TBB GUI, such as sidebar ctrl+b)

This is not cause for panic but should interest Android phone owners who use Tor

zdnet.com
Tor traffic from individual Android apps detected with 97 percent accuracy
New machine learning algorithm can detect when you're using a specific app, such as YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, others.
Catalin Cimpanu for Zero Day
18 Feb 2019

> Italian academics say they've developed an algorithm that can detect the patterns of Android app activity inside Tor traffic with an accuracy of 97 percent. The algorithm isn't a deanonymization script, as it can't reveal a user's real IP address or other identifying details. However, it will reveal if a Tor user is using an Android app... With the algorithm trained, they were then able to point it at Tor traffic and detect whenever the user was utilizing one of the ten apps. Test results showed an algorithm accuracy of 97.3 percent. However, the mechanism they devised isn't as perfect and efficient as it sounds. For starters, it can only be used when there's no background traffic noise on the communication channel, meaning it only works when the user is using his mobile device with one app, and nothing else. If there are too many apps communicating at the same time in the phone's background, TCP traffic patterns get muddled up, and the algorithm's efficiency drops.

I know a similar issue has been reported elsewhere, but in case anyone is interested, I cannot get Tor 8.0.6 running on Linux Mint 16 in turn running on a lenovo z61m. I can download the install file and run it. No errors are reported and the Launching comment appears, but then Tor 8.0 opens along with the message that a new version is available.

FYI it may be a machine issue, because I am also unable to upgrade Linux Mint to a later version, despite an extended conversation in the Mint community.

This problem just for Android devices
another device like (Telegram Desktop Windows, Apple Device)work correctly.
Tor Browser run on the windows.
Is there a way to solve this problem?
Thanks a lot .

If #29175 is the right bug, then it may be possible for an application to smooth over the issue if it lets you supply a SOCKS5 username and password. Open Telegram's proxy options, and see if you can enter a username and password for SOCKS5. You can type anything for them, but it's safer if they're unique from the proxy u+p in other apps so that IsolateSOCKSAuth creates a circuit different from your browser circuits. It's probably a good idea to enter a unique u+p in every app that uses tor as a proxy server because other apps may leak fingerprintable metadata and don't have a New Identity feature. As the Tor FAQ says, "since Tor reuses circuits for multiple TCP connections, it is possible to associate non anonymous and anonymous traffic at a given exit node, so be careful about what applications you run concurrently over Tor. Perhaps even run separate Tor clients for these applications."
https://sedvblmbog.tudasnich.de/docs/faq.html.en#AttacksOnOnionRouting

Search for "IsolateSOCKSAuth" in the manual:

Which is probably due to the fact that when installing Deb v 9.7, xorg and JWM nothing GTK3 is installed.
Should the whole GTK3 be installed or can I settle for a few things?

3) quickly press "(i)" i.e. "Show site information" - the round icon at address-bar

Probably. But it means all they have to do is just to "switch" user's circuits as was shown - up to the moment the chain (which is only 3 nodes long!!) will at least for one moment contain only "friendly" nodes (that collects ip-logs). Some sites also lead to "switching"\building circuits I saw such.

So, Does not it lead to decreasing of anonymity? or May be I miss some knowledge how good\bad circuits may affect to anonymity?

I got a very strange issue:

Putting Tor Browser folder into newly created folder and renaming this new folder leads to complete mess of Tor Browser

Before downloading TBB from torproject.org I usually create a new folder on my USB stick, for example a folder named „Tor 8.0.5“. When Tor Browser is updated I usually change the name of the folder. In the past, with older versions of Windows and TBB, I never got any problems when changing the folder's name. However, I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 (64 bit) now.

I updated Tor Browser and changed the name of the folder where I saved Tor Browser. After reopening Tor Browser, it was completely messed up. (The same happens when downloading the latest version of Tor Browser putting it into a newly created folder.)

1. the smaller window telling that the relays are being loaded didn't appear
2. The Browser opened, but didn't show the usual violet welcome page, but just an empty window
3. When clicking on “help” in order to get that smaller black window (“about Tor Browser”) with the information about the versions numbers of Tor Browser and Firefox, I didn't get the „about Tor“ window with the green globe, but the following: “Firefox Quantum 8.0.2 (based on Mozilla Firefox 60.2.1esr) (64-bit) with the regular Firefox icon instead of Tor Browsers green globe
4. I then tried to open some pages, but Tor Browser told that there's a problem: proxy denies connexion.
5. So, I had a look at the add-ons: The names of the add-ons, like HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript, Torbutton and TorLauncher where still there, and the boxes next to the respective add-ons said that all of them are enabled, which couldn't be the case, because the browser could open any page. Moreover, the icons of the add-ons on the left had disappeared.
6. Then I deactivated all the add-ons, restarted Tor Browser and activated all add-ons again, and finally restarted Tor Browser. Result: I got the usual violet welcome page and I could open any website as usual as well as onion sites. I also checked the browser with jondonym's anonymity test (https://anonymous-proxy-servers.net/) and it said “You are using Tor” and the test showed the usual results for Tor Browser. So far so good. However, the icons in the add-ons window still didn't reappear, except for the onion icon for the Torbutton. Apart from that the “about Tor Browser” window showed “Tor Browser” with the green globe, but not saying “about Tor Browser”, but “about Firefox” - a mixture of the regular firefox “about” window and Tor Browser's “about” window.
7. Everything was messed up, only by changing the name of the folder where Tor Browser is located? (By the way, I did not change the name of the actual Tor Browser folder. I also tried creating a new folder and copy and paste the Tor Browser folders into the new one. Doing so everything was ok!)

Is all this due to Windows 10? Or to Tor Browser? I don't have the slightest clue what is wrong.

Maybe one of you has got an idea why changing the name of the folder leads to such a messy mishmashing Tor Browser with the regular Firefox?

Thanks for the answer. I don't feel at ease with workarounds which need changes within programs etc., because I'm not a computer techie. I feel even less at ease if I read “probably” and “seem to” like in the workaround suggested in your link: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27604

However, as far as I can see, what seems to be working (without messing everything up) is to copy the folder “Tor Browser” from the old folder and paste it into a newly created folder (on a Windows 10 system).

At least, in doing so, Tor Browser looks like it should and works fine. Everything seems to be identical (entry node; bookmarks and preferences I had set; customisations etc).

Would that be safe? Will I get a completely identical copy of Tor Browser? Or will something be messed up which I just don't realise?

If it is ok to copy from the old folder and paste into a new one, perhaps this is an easier and safer way to work around the problem instead of changing/deleting any folders within Tor Browser – for non-techies like me?

Thanks for your answer!

Both folders are on the same USB-Stick.

1. First, I created a folder, named “Tor 25.02.2019”.
2. Secondly, I downloaded the Tor installation file from https://sedvblmbog.tudasnich.de/projects/torbrowser.html.en#downloads
3. Thirdly, I installed Tor Browser in the same folder (“Tor 25.02.2019”).
4. Thus, there were the installation file and the “Tor Browser” folder – both in “Tor 25.02.2019”
5. I created a new folder on the same USB stick named “Tor 25.02.2019 copy”
6. I copied the Tor Browser folder and pasted it into the new folder, which is to say into “Tor 25.02.2019 copy”
7. Finally, I tried both Tor Browsers. As far as I can see, both Tor Browser work absolutely fine. Obviously, the two Tor Browsers are identical twins. Example: If I open one of the Tor Browsers and create a new bookmark, close this Tor Browser and open the other “twin Tor Browser”, the created bookmark is on this “twin Tor Browser” as well.
8. I also tried changing the security slider in one of the twins and changing the settings for accepting cookies. Everything I change in one of the Tor Browser (original and copy) is changed in the other one automatically and exactly identically. It doesn't matter if I change something in the original or in the copy – it works in both directions. What is changed in one of the twin is changed in the other twin. It' reciprocal.

I don't know how this “twin behaviour” works, but it's as I have described above. As I've already mentioned, I'm not a computer techie, but maybe this twin behaviour is due to paths?

Other than moving copying Tor Browser works for me as well (I'm on Linux tho), however, it stops working after removing the initial Tor Browser directory for some reason.

If you don feel comfortable to remove the the extensions.json file you can also work around by disabling and re-enabling torbutton and torlauncher after moving the directory/folder.

Tor Browser circuit stopped working correctly.

Usually the circuit shows the following:

this browser
entry node (guard)
middle node
exit node
address of site you're visiting

From one second to another, suddenly the site I'm visiting isn't shown any longer and I get the following:

this browser
entry node (guard)
middle node
exit node
--unknown--

I had this issue already several times – also with older versions. However, with older versions this happened very rarely. Now, it happens very frequently.

Why does Tor Browser suddenly fails to detect the site I'm accessing?

Does anybody know what is going wrong? I'd be grateful for any hint!

I know now, when the circuit doesn't show the site I'm visiting and indicating “--unknown--” instead. After having maximised Tor Browser and setting the window back to the original size, the circuit shows “--unknown--” instead of the site I'm visiting.

I know that maximising the window is not a good idea. However, this a strange issue. Is there a way to get the accessed site back in the circuit?

Aha, is that reproducible? And what exactly do you do? You go to a.com, look at the display (everything is fine), then maximize the window and set it back to original size (how do you do the latter), then look at the display (now it is broken)? On which operating system does this happen?

Sorry, I forgot to indicate the operating system: I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 (64 bit)

I'm sorry for the late response. I had to try out several things.

Meanwhile, I've tried maximising my other Tor Browsers (all the same version: 8.0.6), but the “--unknown--” - issue isn't reproducible by maximising the window with my other Tor Browsers.

So, maybe maximising the window and the “--unknown--” issue were just coincidental – but I can't tell.

Therefore, I downloaded and installed several “fresh” Tor Browsers and started to work with them as I usually do. In some cases the “--unknown--” issue occurred, in others everything in the circuits was fine.

I also tried some steps more systematically in order to find out which of the changes I do (like changing the security level or changing noscript settings, for instance) lead to the issue. However, I wasn't able to trace the issue back to a certain step.

It is not maximising, neither maximising the browser window by clicking on the maximising button on the top right-hand corner nor by clicking on the full screen button within videos. At least, the issue is not only due to maximising.

So far, I was at a loss.

Then I had a look at the “profile.default”, the contents of which were different in the working and in the broken browsers, and tried by copying and pasting differing files, but had no success in solving the “--unknown--” issue.

What I finally tried and what worked as far as I can see:

I suspected the “profile.default” to be corrupt somewhere. Therefore, I

copied the complete “profile.default” from working browser and pasted into „--unknown--“ circuit browser.
opened TB – violet welcome window was missing
deactivated Torbutton
opened TB again
activated Torbutton
started TB again
result: „--unknown--“ issue had gone, broken browser was working correctly

From this, I draw the conclusion that something must corrupt the “profile.default”, however, I don't know which part of the “profile.default” becomes corrupt nor how and why this happens.

Has anyone got a clue?

Thanks so much for that information. Do you still have the "corrupt" profile? If so, it might help to copy over whole directories instead of single files first to narrow the issue further down before potentially missing a file... Maybe that helps finding the culprit?

March 15, 2019

In reply to gk

Unfortunately, I haven't got the “corrupt” profile.default any longer, but I've still got two other broken Tor Browsers having this “--unknown--” issue.

I compared the profiles of the two broken browsers with the correctly working browsers. All the profiles, regardless whether from a broken or a working browser, contain the same files, at as far as the names of the files are concerned. Nothing is missing.

So far, everything seems to be identical.

I made the same changes as described in my post of March 09, 2019:

I copied the complete “profile.default” from the working browser and pasted into „--unknown--“ circuit browser .

But this time, no luck, it didn't work to “repair” the „--unknown--“ issue.

I'm sorry, but I've really tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to be reproducible.

I'm at a loss.

Until recently I saw streaming from this link:
https://www.rsi.ch/play/tv/live?tvLiveId=livestream_La2
with ExitNodes {ch}
Now I can not see the streaming anymore.

At this link:
https://www.rsi.ch/chi-siamo/mestieri/La-SSR-introduce-la-codifica-digi…
say they have activated Digital Rights Management (DRM)
In the article indicate the browsers that can be used, Firefox is indicated at v. 65 while Torbrowser uses vers.6.05.
How much is the upgrade?

Sto usando anche questo sw: psiphon3(https://psip.me)
Con essa riesco di nuovo a vedere i canali della tv Svizzera.
Potrebbe essere integrata in TOR?

Hello torproject,
can you bring back blocking unencrypted in HTTPSEverywhere?
The new EASE isn't ...smart.

ehm,ok, but it's your, torprojects, responsibility to work for
more technical security on this Tor-browser? I have no idea why
the EFF is weaken this important function.
To fight for the right to anonymous surfing gets more and more
dangerous in -so called- western democracies.

I can't seem to download the update. It seems to download, then says to restart, but when I restart I'm still at the old version, stuck there. I have tried numerous times. One time a box appeared that said I "needed permission." When I clicked through to "Permissions" on the little i in the circle on the address bar I found that they are all set to default. Can you help?

Which operating system are you on? What exactly said the permission box that popped up?
Another thing you could do is enable update logging by going to about:config and flipping the app.update.log preference to true. Then you should get output in the Tor Browser console (you can open that one with Ctrl+Shift+J). Not sure if it already shows error before restarting but it should show you output _after_ restarting, too. (which should contain a better hint at what is going on)

If I have the Library window open, the one that Shows All Bookmarks in a separate window, and I hit New Identity, the Library window does not close. Does Tor Browser completely set up the New Identity when it closes the browser window, or does the Library window, that does not close, interfere in resetting Tor Browser to create a New Identity?

That dropdown that says
"Will you allow blahblah.com to use your HTML5 canvas image data?"

is really excellent human design, clearly marked, simple to use. Thank you.
